Majang Meat Market

I never knew until recently that there is a beef-focused market in Seoul with a similar setup as Noryangjin: it's set up for wholesale trade, but the proprietors do retail as well, and there are restaurants upstairs where you can bring the food for cooking. That's exactly what we did today, getting a five-person assorted platter of local hanwoo for only KRW 200k (US$155). That was quite a steal even after factoring in the small restaurant charges.

Yukhoe

Our butcher took us to a shop called Sutbul Taktak (510-2 Majang-dong, 02-2299-4987), who used charcoal grills and happily prepared our yukhoe for us, along with a few other things like even naengmyeon. And just as with many of the fishmongers at Noryangjin, the butchers at Majang threw in a few goodies for us, like some extra slices of brisket as well as even some thin slices of beef to be eaten raw like sashimi. The meat, be it raw or grilled, was good, especially since it was tender and tasty from the marbling without being too fatty like wagyu.

Grilling Hanwoo

Perhaps what was also interesting though was the way that liver was treated at the market. Our butcher didn't sell it, but he brought us to one of his neighbors who happily offloaded a couple of huge fistfuls of fresh liver for only KRW 1000 (US$0.80). It was supposed to be eaten raw, but for some reason, the restaurant refused to cut it for us, telling us to handle it ourselves. The good thing is that it was pleasantly rich without a strong offal taste, but yeah, we left most of the liver uneaten.
