Exploring One Punggol Hawker Centre
I finally had a chance to check out the hawker center at the new One Punggol community hub (1 Punggol Drive). It's pleasantly spacious and new, although many of the food stalls are branch extensions of other places.
That's not an entirely bad thing though given that many of the stalls are notable ones, like No 25 Minced Meat Noodles from Bukit Merah, which is known for a tonkotsu-like broth from a former Burger & Lobster guy. The consistency of the broth certainly was thick, but the taste was much earthier than a tonkotsu, presumably due to the liver in there, if I tasted it correctly. The noodles were delightfully garnished with some of that dried fish, but you have to spike it with vinegar yourself. One must remember to order the S$8 (US$6) signature bowl rather than the S$4 ($3) dry noodles in order to get the soup though. The customer in front of me learned that the hard way.
Other than that, I also had a chance to try the Botak Cantonese Porridge stall from Tampines as well as the Lim Bo Rojak stall from Joo Chiat, both of which were better than average too. The former was velvety and rich while the latter came with crispy fish skin and prawn fritters straight out of the fryer.
