Wanjia Malatang at People’s Park Complex in Chinatown
I've been eating a lot of malatang lately, mainly because I realized that it's an easy way to consume a high-fiber low-carb meal simply by configuring my bowl with a ton of leafy greens. The spices and broth at this shop (1 Park Road #01-66) aren't as good as Zhangliang or Yangguofu (that soup is a bit garlicky, which isn't going to make me too popular when I get home tonight). But it is better than Gong Yuan, and is priced affordably too. I also liked how the condiment bar featured not just sesame paste and chili oil, but also a hideously dark-looking huajiao oil for added fun. There's also a photo of the chef with Chow Yun-Fat on the wall, although it wasn't clear if that meant that he had actually eaten at this shop.
