A Couple of Snacks Along Crawford Lane in Singapore
I stepped out for a couple of quick bites this afternoon, the first of which was this Teochew fishball noodle stall at the Wiseng Food Place kopitiam (462 Crawford Lane #01-29). The mee pok noodles were pleasantly firm yet thin, and the use of orange-colored fish cakes and shredded lettuce were interesting. But the more notable thing was the smoky chili oil that they used. It was reminscent of Da Lian, but I should've asked him to add more because it wasn't pronounced enough.
Then I walked up to Heap Seng Leong (10 North Bridge Road #01-1059, 6292-2368). This was a very old school place, where an abacus sits under a mobile payments QR code and a silver-haired gentleman in pajamas uses a small charcoal grill both to brew coffee and to toast your bread, all while using a giant meat cleaver to cut butter in this dimly-lit shop. The food itself wasn't that interesting aside from a mild smokiness in the bread and saltiness in the butter, but the cool setting made up for it.
