Lettuce Roll

I lovvvvvvvve yakitori. And yet after all of these years, I only now realized that Hakata has its own way of doing it. But I guess it doesn't surprise me either that it oftentimes involves pork and cabbage, like that lettuce roll above. This chain took over Masamune's old spot (84 Tanjong Pagar Road, 6970-7810), going by the name Hakata Yakitori Batten Yokatoh. That lettuce roll above is their specialty, but they also have a variety of other sticks that aren't as vegetable-centric, yet aren't the usual kushiyaki that come to mind.

Hataka Takigyoza

Actually, only half of the menu is kushiyaki. There is a lot of other stuff that they also claim as their specialty, like the takigyoza dumplings in soup above, with the option to be laced with a bit of their homemade red chili oil. Yes, it was pleasantly hearty, especially with that broth. I also liked a number of other things that I got, like some chicken neck with coriander, grilled ray fin, and a deep-fried yam. Sure, the sauce on that corn below was sweet, but most other things weren't, and it wasn't hard to finish corn that was deep fried, even if it was sweet.

Deep Fried Corn

Yes, I'm coming back, especially since there is so much else on the menu that is worth exploring, including not just an endless sake list, but also things that I noticed on the menu like a coriander salad, brewed cod stomach, chicken liver, as well as an elaborate-looking soba served in a big wooden tray with a bunch of colorful vegetables. It would take me a while before getting bored here. Best of all, the prices weren't anywhere as high as I thought it would be.
