Lyon's Croix-Rousse and Saint-Antoine Markets
There are two big outdoor markets in Lyon that get very lively on the weekends. I went to both. The first one I hit up was Marché Alimentaire de la Croix-Rousse, going an impressive distance from the top of the hill down Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse. One saw the usual things that you would expect at a market, including produce, seafood, cheese. This guy had a huge supply of endives.
I didn't really see any fresh meat at the market, but there were several folks selling huge arrays of cured meat. There were also a number of rotisserie chicken folks; not only did they look fantastic, but I was really curious about those potatoes that they have at the bottom of the grill (think: chicken fat and juices constantly dripping on them). I didn't get a chance to try them. This market seemed largely patronized by locals.
The Marché Alimentaire Saint-Antoine Célestins was even bigger, and more scenic being on the Saône River (and thus, had a few more tourists). The merchandise was largely the same, but interestingly also had a section devoted to books, while another section on the other side of the river sold arts and crafts. They also had some oyster guys with tables along the river, although there were fewer than I had expected.
