Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse
Going to Les Halles was one of my top priorities in Lyon. It's a market, but is distinguished from the other ones nearby in that it is an upscale one under a roof, with rather high-end products as well as several tables/counters to dine at. I took a guided tour this morning where they took us to multiple shops, the first of which was one where I got to sample a fig stuffed with foie gras. It was as delicious as it sounded, and apparently is a local thing to eat on certain holidays around here.
Naturally, my preference was for the shellfish. My jaw just dropped at the sight of some stone crabs cut in half to expose their bright orange roe, as well as a selection of silver and purple sea urchin. We went for smaller black sea urchin though, as well as an array of oysters. I could've easily sat at many of the various seafood places to give all of their shellfish a go.
And of course there were the sweets, including a chocolate shop and others doing macarons as well as buttery praline pastries. We also had a cheese tasting, my favorite of which was a super punchy goat milk-based one called Saint Gemay, as well as a charcuterie platter from Sibilia, a famous butcher who worked with Paul Bocuse himself and currently supplies a lot of the Michelin-starred restaurants around town.
