Israel's Miznon at Chelsea Market in NYC
Here was the second part of my lunch today: a wild mushroom pita from Miznon, a small Israeli chain at Chelsea Market (435 West 15th Street, 646-490-5871). And it was fantastic. The pita bread was hardly the dry dense stuff that usually comes to mind: these were soft, moist, and fluffy, almost like a steamed baozi but slightly acidic instead of sweet.
My wild mushroom filling was "a whole forest burned on hot steel" (as the menu put it) that went wonderfully with its accompanying scallions, sour cream, and mildly spicy sauce. It was much better than Pita Pan, and this is coming from someone who likes Pita Pan! (No, the green chili on the side wasn't spicy, but it was still a nice touch.)
This guy is also famous for doing a whole baked baby cauliflower rubbed in olive oil. My expectations were a bit too high, as it just tasted like baked cauliflower at first. But it grew on me, especially as I worked my way into the soft, slightly sweet, and almost buttery center. Plus, this place is full of energy, with good music loud shouts coming from the open kitchen. Awesome!
