Ami Ami at Great World City's Shokutsu Ten
The Kuriya folks have opened up another one of their Skokutsu Ten Japanese food streets, this time at Great World City. There were only three shops here, one of which is Shimbashi Soba and another being a Sapporo ramen place. I thus went for the third one, a robatayaki-cum-tempura shop. At first I thought it might have some potential, with some impressively fresh-looking fish in the case in front of me, plus an open kitchen where all of the frying and grilling was happening.
I went for the tempura set. At just S$29.80 (US$21.50), it obviously wasn't going to feature any high-end ingredients, and the batter wasn't particularly light either. But each piece was fried individually and brought to you at the counter, making it a bit reminiscent of Teppei's original shop when it had first opened. They also interestingly featured a tempura egg option for your rice, presumably inspired by Keisuke's Tendon Ginza Itsuki.
It's too bad then that they brought out your rice and soup first, meaning that they were cold by the time I finally got around to working on carbs. The salt that they provided was not the usual green tea and curry flavors, but instead a slightly annoying garlic one. And honestly, I felt sick from all of the grease in the end...so much that I won't order this again. Like Kuriya, this place seemed to be geared more towards theatrics with its mounds of crushed ice and scallops that came to you with a live flame underneath it.
